In 2018, our in-country legal fellow Toochi Ngwangwa, joined the the National Strategy on Transitional Justice (NSTJ), an initiative jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Justice and the UNDP in The Gambia. They visited areas outside of Banjul, in the countryside, with ISLP helping to assist with data collection through interviews and focus groups with the intention of developing a three to five-year roadmap to focus transitional justice work across the country. The focus groups and long form interviews aimed at discovering Gambians’ perceptions, opinions, beliefs and attitudes towards various possible choices, objectives and methods for transitional justice initiatives. The information that has been gathered is central to supporting the quality, representativeness and objectivity of the NSTJ.
Toochi conducted interviews herself, asking questions provided by the UNDP As part of this initiative she travelled to Essau and Balangerr. Toochi is the current legal fellow who is working with the PPP unit in the Gambia but as in all instances when ISLP can, we quickly devote resources, upscale or get involved in any projects which further our mission of promoting just, accountable and inclusive development. Thanks to Toochi for her work on this!
