ISLP’s pro bono client, a prominent United Nations Special Rapporteur, recently praised our team for the “excellent” amicus curiae brief we wrote for her in an important freedom of expression case.
Professor Fionnuala Ni Aolain, who serves as the UN Special Rapporteur for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism, sought our legal assistance to oppose a Honduran criminal law which went too far in punishing speech concerning terrorism. Our amicus curiae brief on her behalf argued that the Honduran law violated international norms, and will be filed in the Supreme Court of Justice of Honduras. It can be viewed here.
Our team consisted of ISLP Program Officer Alejandra Cicero; Thomas Sullivan, an expert volunteer from Ballard Spahr LLP; and Dick Winfield, long-time co-chair of our Media Law Working Group.
The brief cited, among other authorities, decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (San Jose, Costa Rico), the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France) and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
