On July 28th, ISLP delivered a workshop for Ugandan lawyers on Defending Digital Rights and Freedoms. The virtual session was hosted in partnership with the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), the Centre for Law and Democracy (CLD), and the Uganda Law Society (ULS).
Moderated by ISLP’s Regional Legal Advisor for Africa Bridget Mafusire, the speakers from ISLP, CIPESA, CLD, the Freedom of Expression Hub, and Wilkinson Barker Knauer addressed topics including human rights issues affecting women journalists in Uganda, using international freedom of expression norms in domestic courts, applying international law to defend freedom of expression, and shaping the legal framework for cybersecurity to effectively defend human rights.
In a testament to the critical importance of the subject matter, the webinar was attended by over 80 participants. We are grateful to UNESCO’s Global Media Defence Fund for supporting ISLP’s work on freedom of expression.
