On February 14th, ISLP volunteer, Paul-Claude Bérubé traveled to India to receive two awards in Lucknow and Allahabad recognizing his work on disability rights issues in India. Mr. Bérubé, an expert in international disability rights law, has given his time generously to ISLP projects in the region, in particular providing expert advice at a three-day conference on disability and the law in Mumbai, organized by ISLP, the Tata Institute for Social Sciences and the Human Rights Law Network. Whilst he received the awards on behalf of ISLP, they are a testament to his tireless work to empower and support those who face challenges or prejudice as a result of disability.
Talking about the awards that he received, Mr. Bérubé said:
It is clear that there is a real desire in India to ensure persons with disabilities are treated like any other Indian citizen, and contribute positively to the development of Indian society. ISLP – UK is proud to help persons with disabilities in India by providing specialist lawyers to work with you in this way. So, I am honored and accept these awards also on behalf of ISLP-UK.
During his trip, Mr. Bérubé had several meetings with the Chancellor of the Faculty of Law at Lucknow University, and gave two speeches to the university faculty on the topics of “Disability issues around the world” and “Human Rights protection from another perspective”.
