The Republic of The Gambia has embarked on a transition to democracy resulting in a welcome influx of foreign investment in its commercial and infrastructure sectors. In an effort to support The Gambian government during this transition, ISLP and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) collaborated to deliver a series of workshops over the course of a year aimed at strengthening the legal capacity of key Gambian institutions involved in negotiations with investors.
In October 2020, ISLP volunteers Jay Finkelstein of DLA Piper and Bruce W. Jenett of PremierCounsel, developed a series of workshops on applying practical tools to abstract negotiating techniques. This series followed on from the first training, delivered a year earlier, by ISLP volunteer A. Wayne Lalle Jr. of Kraftson Caudle, on substantive issues in international commercial and investment agreements.
One Gambian State Counsel noted after the workshops that, “[t]he presentation was brilliant… the presenters had mastery of the subject area, and the exercises and Q&A sessions aroused critical thinking.”
ISLP is grateful for the significant time and effort that our pro bono volunteers gave to this important project, and for our partnership with IDLO. This project was funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
