December 6, 2012 Michele O'Brien, Director of ISLP-Europe joined panelists for a conference at the Paris Bar exploring "Solidarity, Social Innovation and Commitment of Lawyers". Ms. O'Brien addressed the topic of international legal pro bono efforts that can help support the rights of the most vulnerable and marginalized around the world.

ISLP Reception: Meet New Executive Director Garth Meintjes
November 13, 2012 Garth Meintjes, ISLP's new Executive Director, was introduced to volunteers and funders at an evening reception hosted by Latham & Watkins in New York City. Latham partner Witold Balaban gave a short introduction and welcome, and ISLP volunteers Sigurd Sorenson and Robert Herbst shared their experiences with, respectively, a media freedom project in Mongolia and a special prosecution for the Special Court of Sierra Leone.

November 19, 2012 ISLP-Europe hosted a breakfast panel, "The Role of Lawyers in the New Political and Economic Order in the Mediterranean" at the Paris Bar. It was moderated by Ramón Mullerat OBE, former President of the Council of the Bars and Law Societies of the European Union, a lawyer in Spain and an Avocat à la Cour de Paris, France. Speakers included Aryeh Neier, President Emeritus of the Open Society Foundations, Dominique Attias of the Paris Bar Chamber, Hans Corell, former Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and the Legal Counsel of the United Nations and Jean-Claude Najar, General Counsel for GE France & Senior Counsel for Europe. <more>

October 4, 2012 The "Paris Bar Solidarity Fund", founded by the Paris Bar, showcased pro bono initiatives by Parisian lawyers by presenting awards to the four most outstanding volunteer efforts in the areas of access to justice and human rights, in France or abroad. Several ISLP projects were nominated by lawyers in Paris for consideration and a project partnering the Paris office of Winston & Strawn with Partners in Health and Zanmi Lasanté in Haiti took top honors.

July 23, 2012 ISLP introduced its first book-length publication, Exporting the Matrix: The Campaign to Reform Media Laws Abroad, edited by Richard N. Winfield, head of ISLP's Media Law Working Group on July 23rd. Exporting the Matrix presents the personal accounts of 15 international media law specialists who have worked pro bono helping transitional democracies draft and revise legislation involving freedom of information and provide on-site assistance to local stakeholders around the world. <more>

June 6, 2012 ISLP-UK held a reception for new volunteers, hosted at the law offices of Herbert Smith in London. The event provided an opportunity for potential volunteers to meet and hear first-hand from lawyers who have volunteered on ISLP projects about their experiences. The evening was well-attended with lawyers from Hogan Lovells, Herbert Smith, Studio Legal Esposito, Kirkland & Ellis, Edwards Wildman Palmer, Latham & Watkins, Temple Garden Chambers, Slaughter & May, Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Essex Street Chambers, and retired partners from Simmons & Simmons and Baker & McKenzie. <more>

December 1, 2011 ISLP celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a Gala luncheon in New York City that included honored guest George Soros and special greetings from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and actor and philanthropist Matt Damon.
