2017 Judges Lecture, Columbia Law School

Last week, ISLP Co-founder and co-head of the ISLP Media Law Working Group, Dick Winfield, attended the 2017 Judges lecture at Columbia Law School.

Entitled ‘Freedom of Expression versus Privacy: Striking a Fair Balance’ Judge Anna Yudkivska, ECHR Judge, President judge of Section IV, reviewed important ECHR cases, developments and went on to explain the fact intensive work of the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg. She then proceeded to attempt to reconcile these two issues of expression and privacy.

The event was co-sponsored by the ISLP and was introduced by CLS Professor Anu Bradford along with Dick, who as well as representing ISLP is also the Professor of Comparative Mass Media Law at Columbia and coached the Law Schools court team for last year’s Price International Media Law Moot Court Competition. The lecture was well received by the largely student audience. Of note, the Judge was mildly critical of the “right to be forgotten” decision in the Google Spain case of the EU European Court of Justice.
